THE SERPENT BEGUILED ME, AND I DID EATBy Kelli Campbell
Genesis 3:13, ”And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.”
I have had the privilege of speaking and telling our story many times across the United States. When I speak about what we have been through and all of the fears I have had, I have countless ladies come up to me afterwards and tell me that they are struggling with fear as well. I, honestly, thought I was the only one who had a problem with fear but have found that it is a huge problem in this day and times.
Fear is not pleasing to the Lord. Having fear is not living by faith. Romans 14:23, ”For whatsoever is not of faith is sin.” Fear tells God you do not trust Him or His ways. Fear is rooted in unbelief. When we chose not to believe God it shows God that we trust ourselves over God Himself. How prideful!
As I studied the children of Israel, I noticed that many times they accused God of trying to kill them when He had nothing but blessings and good things for them. Whenever they came up against something hard or that they did not like the first thing they did was accuse Him of trying to destroy them. They chose to believe that God was out to get them and destroy them. They chose to believe a lie.
Exodus 14:11-12, ”And they said unto Moses, Because there were no graves in Egypt, hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness? wherefore hast thou dealt thus with us, to carry us forth out of Egypt? Is not this the word that we did tell thee in Egypt, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians? For it had been better for us to serve the Egyptians, than that we should die in the wilderness.”
When I got to the New Testament, I noticed that whenever Jesus was casting out demons the demons accused Him of trying to torment them or of trying to destroy them. Jesus, Who was trying to help others, Who lived a perfect, sinless life was accused of trying to destroy lives. They, also, chose to believe a lie.
Mark 1:24, ”Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.”
Luke 8:28, ”When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God most high? I beseech thee, torment me not.”
After the Lord showed me that Satan used lies to deceive people in the Old and New Testament, I went back to Genesis where fear is first mentioned. I was so ashamed because I was just like Eve…“The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.” Beguiled means to be deceived. I “ate” or believed Satan’s lies by living in fear of what was going to happen next that it separated me from the love and goodness of God. I was deceived but I made a choice to believe myself and my fears instead of believing that whatever happened in my life or that of my family that God would take care of me and would give me the strength and grace to help me.
Genesis 3:1, 4, 9-10, 13, ”Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? … And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: … And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I
hid myself. … And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.”
Satan’s purpose is to deceive us. He wants to separate us from God. We cannot trust and obey God if we are living in fear. If we believe that God is cruel because He has allowed us to go through difficult times or that He wants to harm us then Satan has been successful. Satan is a divider. Living in fear divides our heart and puts importance on us and not on God. We are not the most important person…God is.
Revelation 12:9, ”And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.”
The Bible tells clearly tells us that Jesus wants to give us life not take away our lives. How can we trust Him with our salvation but not trust Him with our lives? We have to believe God’s Word and not what our wicked heart and thoughts tell us. My ways and reasonings will always be wrong if it contradicts God’s Word. God’s Word it truth. John 8:32, ”And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
John 10:10, ”The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”
Fear truly does have torment. I have really worked on seeking the Lord, more than ever, because I know that knowing Him and knowing more of His love for me is the answer to my sin of fear. Jesus is that perfect love! I have grown a lot because I realized that all I have been through has been for my good. I am so thankful for the trials. They have not been fun but God has been so merciful to me and has helped me to see that I need Him more than I need anything or anyone.
I John 4:18, ”There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.”
I want, more than anything, to have a meek (humble, gentle, not harsh) and quiet spirit (inner peace of heart, undisturbed mind). If God says that is a great price in His sight then that is what I will strive for, with the help of the Holy Spirit.
1 Peter 3:4, ”But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.”
I have not arrived in being free from fear but I am so much better. Learning the truths that I just shared have helped me to realize that Satan is a liar and God is the Deliverer, my Help, and He is truth. One day soon I will be able to say I am delivered because I have sought the Lord more than ever before. Do not ever believe that because you are living in fear now that you will always be a fearful person. That is a lie from Satan. You, too, can be delivered. Are you seeking Him?
Psalm 34:4, ”I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.”
Do not be beguiled like Eve and eat. There is always hope and deliverance from “Him was called Faithful and True,” Revelation 19:11.
